Memecoins Die in an Hour. NFT Collections Write a Roadmap About It.
Listen up, class. Today’s lesson: a memecoin dies in an hour and the chart is the obituary. An NFT collection dies for a year and calls it a phase.
The coin is a ticker, a picture, and a curve. Pump.fun alone has minted on the order of twenty million of them. Most never graduate. The ones that do still mostly go to zero. Nobody posts “utility soon.” The bonding curve already said it. Flat line, next ticker, the timeline moves on. Failure is the product. Cheap, public, and over before lunch.
A collection will not allow that. Custom art. Rarity sheet. Discord. Mint page. Five thousand or ten thousand SKUs, and a floor that is already the seller who needs out. When the bids stop, the team does not die. It publishes. Phase 2. Staking. A token. A game. Merch. “The holders know.” The holders are twelve people and a bot refreshing the floor. The roadmap is not a plan. It is a way to keep the funeral from starting.
The numbers already held the service. In 2023 a scrape of 73,257 collections found 69,795 with a market cap of zero ether. About 95 percent. About four in five never sold out. That was the time to close the Discord. The scene read it as a marketing problem and minted again. CoinGecko’s tracked market now sits around $2.2 billion across fewer than 2,000 collections, and CryptoPunks alone are about 41 percent of it. Sales in 2026 are running near $1.9 billion, against $23.8 billion in 2022. The folders did not get the memo. Individual NFTs passed a billion. The buyers did not.
A memecoin at least pools the bet. One ticker, one crowd, one death. A 10k collection splits the same attention into inventory, then the floor is set by whoever blinks. The new animal does not find a new audience. It borrows the last one and writes a Notion doc about why this borrow is different. GM in the morning. AMA on Thursday. Reveal when the art is done. The art was done. The demand was not.
The few that lasted did not last as roadmaps. They lasted as memes that happened to have a membership card. Everyone else is still in phase 2 of a chart that ended in phase 1.
So the next time a mint page says the community is early, check the time of death. The memecoin already posted it. The collection is still drafting the caption.
Class dismissed. The roadmap dropped. The hour was up last year.

(P.S. No financial advice. If the plan needs a phase 2, the phase 1 already answered.)
