One Work, Four Lights: Inside PURPLE RAIN — LIGHT STUDIES
Twenty works. Four masters. One study. All on-chain.
Most collections start with a folder. This one started with a single piece.
PURPLE RAIN — LIGHT STUDIES takes one original work and splits it into four distinct expressions of light: DAWN, DUSK, NIGHT, and ECLIPSE. Each light is its own set of five. Twenty pieces total. Every one is an animated 1024×1024 GIF, minted on Base.
But the structure is where this gets interesting.
Four Masters, Four Grails
The first work of each light is the master.
It’s not a marketing label — it’s in the artwork. The master carries one extra ring, carved directly into the piece, and the on-chain image confirms it. Once a master is minted, it’s gone for good. No reissue. No second master. No “wait, actually.”
That means there are four grails in this study, not twenty.
DAWN’s master is already taken — #1, claimed early. DUSK’s master (#6), NIGHT’s (#11), and ECLIPSE’s (#16) are still on the table.
The Four Lights
Each light is a different reading of the same source:
- DAWN — warmer, lighter. The softest of the four. Master #1 taken.
- DUSK — deeper violet. The richest saturation of the set. Master #6 available.
- NIGHT — cooler, darker. More shadow, more restraint. Master #11 available.
- ECLIPSE — almost monochrome. The most stripped-back expression. Master #16 available.
Same work. Four moods. The original PURPLE RAIN sits behind all of them, viewable on OpenSea.
The Details That Matter
Here’s what separates this from a standard drop:
On Base. Gas is a fraction of a cent per mint. No $40 transaction to collect a $90 piece.
0.03 ETH per work. Flat pricing across all four lights. No tiering games.
5% royalties to the artist on every resale. The creator fee stays intact, forever.
Everything reads from the contract. The live page pulls directly from the chain — no marketplace layer, no database, no middleman deciding what’s real. The contract address is public: 0xa83D17EFCbBC88f461790861d7de67ca6373664a.
Max 3 per wallet. No single collector sweeping the set before anyone else can participate.
Where It Stands
As of writing:
- 4 of 20 works minted
- DAWN: 4/5 — master #1 taken
- DUSK: 0/5 — master #6 available
- NIGHT: 0/5 — master #11 available
- ECLIPSE: 0/5 — master #16 available
Three masters. Three grails. Still open.
Why This Structure Works
Most generative collections sell you 10,000 variations of the same base layer and call it scarcity. This does the opposite.
It gives you twenty pieces with a reason to care which one you get. The master isn’t just rarer by number — it’s rarer by design. The extra ring isn’t metadata. It’s in the art.
That’s a different kind of collecting. You’re not buying a trait. You’re buying a position in a set that has a clear hierarchy, a clear origin, and a clear endpoint.
Once all twenty are minted, the study is complete. Four masters. Sixteen works. One work.
