In 2024, a security researcher spent six weeks building a professional relationship with a colleague named “Alicia Chen.”

Stanford MBA. Mutual connections. Thoughtful messages. She remembered details from previous conversations. She asked smart questions about his work.

She did not exist.

“Alicia Chen” was a synthetic persona — an AI-generated identity with a fabricated photograph, a constructed professional history, and a conversation engine that could maintain a credible relationship for weeks before making a single ask.

⚠️ THE REALITY

The honey trap is one of the oldest techniques in intelligence tradecraft. In 1975, it required a trained human operative and months of patient development. In 2026, it requires a laptop and an afternoon.

  • Executive outreach — Board members accept connection requests from anyone
  • Recruiting — Fake candidates with perfect backgrounds and AI-generated references
  • Investor relations — Synthetic “analysts” requesting sensitive financial data
  • Customer support — AI personas building trust inside your Slack before the ask

What This Means for Pentesters

This is a new attack surface. And most security teams aren’t testing for it.

As a pentester, you should be asking:

  • Can I create a synthetic persona and get past vendor screening?
  • How long does it take to build trust with an executive or engineer?
  • What sensitive information can I extract without ever triggering a security alert?
  • Does the company verify identity at any point before sharing access or data?

Traditional pentests focus on technical vulnerabilities — APIs, authentication, injection flaws. The human layer is often ignored. But the human layer is now the easiest layer to exploit.

What You Should Do Right Now

  1. Verify identity — Video calls. Cross-reference mutual connections. Reverse image search profile photos. Assume nothing.
  2. Train your team — “If a stranger wants to build a relationship, verify first.”
  3. Audit your vendor process — Is there any identity verification step? If not, add one.
  4. Watch for “too perfect” — AI-generated personas often lack flaws, typos, or the messy reality of real humans.
  5. Test your own exposure — Have someone attempt a synthetic persona attack against your organization. You’ll be surprised how far they get.
